NextGen Journal is run entirely by college students, and we’re looking for more people to join our team. Our current staff includes over 160 people from nearly 75 colleges and universities across the country. All staff positions are unpaid, but they provide great experience, national exposure, an excellent addition to a resume, and the chance to be a critical part of NGJ’s operation. College Staff Writers write roughly once per week for NGJ. A typical piece may involve reporting on a topic that is relevant to college students and our generation, or one directly related to college & college life.
Looking for: Current undergraduate students; Good deal of writing experience; Some journalistic background
News & Politics: Staff Writers
News & Politics Staff Writers write roughly once per week for NextGen Journal. A typical piece may involve reporting on some news as it relates to college students or analysis of a critical story. Staff writers can develop a ‘specialty’ or ‘beat’ if they choose.
Looking for: Current undergraduate students; Good deal of writing experience; Journalistic background helpful
Sports & Culture: Sports Writers
NGJ Sportswriters focus primarily on college sports and major professional news. A typical piece may involve thorough analysis or reporting, including profiles of major student athletes. Sports Opinion slots are also available in Voices.
Looking for: Current students; Solid writing experience; detailed sports knowledge; Journalistic background helpful
Voices Contributors
NGJ Voices Contributors produce content for the ‘Voices’ (opinion) section of NGJ, which is the real backbone of our site. Contributor positions are very flexible, both in terms of topics and timing. The average Contributor writes twice per month, but it varies quite a bit. Above all, we’re looking for people with interesting perspectives or experiences to add to the conversation.
