This debate should not be: "Is a cap and trade program the right solution to address climate change and our dependence on foreign oil?"

Instead it should be: "Is a cap and trade program a good idea?"

In the long run it is a good idea. In fact almost any plan that will make companies transition to a greener approach is good because it is good for the long term goals of a company. The truth is people want to by the new and more technologically advance pieces of hardware. That means companies need to innovate in order to stay competitive. Example: Look at GM compared to Toyota. If people still wanted to buy gas inefficient cars....then praise the almighty because that means American companies need to change. Screw global warming and foreign oil dependence. I could care less about what you think about them. But in 5 years can American companies innovate to what consumers want and stay competitive or will they stay in there old ways and fail?

This plan is just a kick in the butt to get companies to wake up and actually pay attention to what people want. Is it going to improve global warming? Hopefully. Will it reduce our dependence on foreign oil? Maybe. Is it what America needs? Yes. Understood that a lot of miners and other workers will be out of a job.
